Preventative Care

All children are examined to determine their dental care needs, then preventative care is provided prior to restorative care. Preventative care begins with placing dental sealants.

Dental sealant placement is performed in four steps:

  • Teeth are thoroughly cleaned with a pumice paste. This removes the plaque and bacteria, smoothing the surface of the teeth in preparation for acid etching.

  • A 37% phosphoric acid gel is placed in the grooves of the teeth, sits for 20 seconds, and then is rinsed off.

  • Teeth are thoroughly dried. Moisture control is essential for the long term success of the sealants.

  • Sealant material is brushed into the grooves of the teeth and then hardened with an ultraviolet light. The patient can then eat with their finished sealants right away.
